Colonel Waightstill Avery, a native of Morganton, North Carolina, inspired the county’s name. From 1779 to 1781, Colonel Avery was a member of the Continental Army. After the signing of the Declaration of Independence, he took office as North Carolina’s first Attorney General. At 3,589 feet above sea level, Newland is the eastern United States’ highest county seat. As the place that holds the source of the Toe River in a wide, flat valley, its original name was Old Fields of Toe.

Avery County typically has 10 degrees lower temperatures than neighboring cities such as Asheville and Charlotte. Highs in the summer average in the seventies, but winter highs rarely rise above the forties. Grandfather Mountain’s US Weather Service weather station has seen temperatures as high as 83 degrees in August 1983 and as low as minus 32 degrees in January 1985.

One of the best times to visit the North Carolina mountains is the summer, which we wholeheartedly agree with. But when summer’s glory has faded, the fall’s vibrant hues usher in the Fraser fir harvest and downhill skiing season. When that happens, spring in all its splendor returns. All of Avery County comes here because they know it’s the best!

About 58 inches of snow falls each winter on average. The ski slopes are covered from mid-November to March thanks to this and the artificial snow generated at the resorts. In this area, a whopping 57 inches of rain falls annually. This, in addition to the snowfall, is what keeps the land green and the mountain rivers flowing.
